DISCERNMENT AND CHOICE OF A STATE IN LIFE

Religious discernment is also a time to see with the eyes of your heart so that you can choose life in God. It is a time when you allow yourselves to be open to God’s will and it is an opportunity to allow your hearts to guide your mind more than only trusting your own reasoning.
When talking about discovering your vocation, discernment means the process of that discovery through prayer, reflection and discussion as to how God calls each person to love Him and serve Him better, whether as a priest, a consecrated religious man or woman, a married person or a consecrated single person.
When we decide to take up the Lord’s invitation and follow him, the next step is to discern how he wants me to follow him, what role he wants me to play in his mission, what particular life task he is assigning to me. This is what is known as discerning and choosing our state in life.

To discern your vocation means to sort through the movements of your heart and unfold the truth of who you most deeply are. In discernment you discover the best way for you to live in this truth before God.
Discernment Prayer
There are three basic steps of discernment. To discern God's way in our hearts, we must:

* Believe
* Listen
* Trust

Believe: You must first believe that God loves you very much! God created you in all your uniqueness, beauty, gifts and weaknesses. God wants your good, your peace and your happiness.

Listen: The second aspect in the discernment process is to listen to the movements of God's Spirit.

Trust: The third aspect, we need to respond to God in trust and also total surrender is required. Mary, Mother of Jesus who believed, listened and then trusted. Mary certainly could not understand the message of the angel but she did trust it. She said, "Let it be done to me as you say."
