A. ASPIRANCY OR PREPOSTULANCY
During this stage, the aspirant now a postulant lives within the convent known as the postulate. Here, the young lady is gradually introduced to our Franciscan way of life guided by the Postulant Mistress. She is not fully a member of the congregation and thereby not strictly restricted. The period of postulancy is between one to two years.
In our congregation, Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, discernment starts with the aspirancy period, when a young women who feels drawn to join us starts making initial enquiries, contacts and visits to our communities and several seminars organised by the vocation promoter, in order, to clarify how she feels.
This is a period of discovery. During this stage, the aspirant stays in a place other than the Sisters’ convent. They keep their jobs, and live their normal lives. They only observe the Sisters who in turn observe them. They try to learn and discover if truly that is the way of life they will love to live. This lasts for a period of six months to a year.
The Postulancy period, is also, a period when the candidate is prepared for the Novitiate. This period allows the individual to grow in experience, knowledge and awareness of our Franciscan way of life. It is also a time of growing in the awareness of the life and mission of the Congregation.
